During the war in Vietnam in 1969, U.S. Air Force Master Sergeant Robert Buck was the best the USA had to offer in Morse Code. Russia and its allies relied heavily on Morse Code in communication with each other. Sgt. Buck was sent from Keesler AFB, Mississippi to DaNang, South Vietnam, and then on to Misawa AFB, Japan to break a special code used by the North Vietnamese who were preparing a covert action against the FLR-9 circular antenna known as the Elephant Cage that gathered intelligence information for the USA throughout Southeast Asia.
While attempting to break the code, Sgt. Buck's life was in peril when the enemy found out who he was and they tried to kill him before he breaks the code. Sgt. Buck, with the help of the Security Troops, engages the North Vietnamese in a short fierce fire fight in a camp established by the enemy in a valley away from the base among a group of Cherry Blossom trees and Elm trees. The entire enemy force of 14 men was wiped out except for a Russian agent named Andre who escaped capture.
Commended for his service in breaking the secret code and for his actions during the firefight, Buck accepts an offer from his commanding officer, Col. Sheridan to go with him for a new assignment in Germany. Before leaving for Germany, Sgt. Buck is sent to the CIA camp known as 'the farm' for three weeks of intensive training to become a CIA spy. Upon arrival in Germany and on his way to the Darmstadt Army Base, he sees a man that reminded him of the man called Andre, leading a demonstration against the local police. Buck is absolutely sure that the man is Andre Pavorich, Russia's super spy, and the chase is on.

Burke has done it again. Spy Chaser is a suspenseful, easy-to-read, espionage novel involving tracking down a top Russian spy to help prevent WW III. However, It is hard to believe the key figure can learn several languages in such a short period of time but, that is based totally on my own learning curve. Recommend you give it a try. You will not be disappointed. The author does a great job describing the flow of events and main characters to help the reader visualize the storyline. I worked for the CIA as a training officer during the time that this story unfolds. I thought the description of the training and activities at the "Farm" to be very accurate. The author also did a good job with the character development of Master Sergeant Buck. I found myself sympathizing with him and cheering him on. The German countryside was described so well that I found myself shivering with the cold. Some elements of the spy chase did not seem realistic; however, it was a good story, and I was intrigued to the very end. Good job.
Great Story! Excellent period piece, focusing on the time when the Vietnam war was going to either explode or fade out, we are taken through the whole spy process, from training to the completion of a very dangerous mission. Many who read this book will remember where they were when the hypothetical alternate history in this book almost happened! Action-packed and fast-paced! Worth the read!
